Community Roadmap to Employment

As a community we are going to develop a Community Roadmap to Employment with the long term goal of increasing labour market attachment for youth with multiple barriers to employment.

How are we going to do it?

On November 25th we are going to convene 100 people who are passionate about increasing the economic participation of youth with disabilities in Durham Region. We are going to spend a full day of planning and organizing an ACTION PLAN.

If you want to be involved you can get on the guest list by emailing  dren@dren.org or calling Diana at 905-720-1777 ext. 224. 

The event will be from 9 to 3 and will take place at the Abilities Centre. The nature of the process does not accomodate "drop-ins", so please plan to arrive on time and stay for the whole day.

Community Roadmap to Employment: School to Work

Over 100 community members from Durham Region came together on November 25th with the intention of co-creating a Community Roadmap to Employment for Youth with Barriers to Employment. 

By the end of the day utilizing an open space technology format a plan was in place, action teams formed and a commitment was solidified to increase the economic participation for youth in Durham.

Six priorities were identified: 

  • Employer Development 
  • Engaging Schools 
  • Fear Factor
  • Barrier Free Hiring Processes
  • Role of Local Government
  • Networking

On February 2nd we are going to come together to unpack these priorities.Presenters will provide information on what is available now for youth with disabilities who are transitioning from school to work providing a starting point to work from.

Community Roadmap to Employment: Engaging Employers

Do you want to increase the economic participation of youth with barriers to employment in Durham Region? Are you interested in ensuring that Durham Region is seen as an inclusive community to work, play and live? Help DREN co-create a Community Roadmap for Employment for Youth with Barriers to Employment.

Bob Vansickle, Training Coordinator for ODEN Centre of Excellence, has just returned from presenting at the United Nations in Vienna on Community Living Sarnia-Lambton's Employment Transitions Program. Community Living Sarnia-Lambton' was awarded the 'Zero Project Innovative Practice 2017' Award for their Summer Employment Transitions program model. The summer employment service for students with a disability is considered an innovative and effective solution that can be shared globally to aid in solving the problem of unemployment of persons' with a disability. 

Bob Vansickle has graciously agreed to share the model with us in Durham Region including how to engage employers and gain support from community influencers. Help us put Durham Region on the map as a community where employment is accessible to all!

Skills Development for Youth Program - Pickering - August 8

Are you between 15 and 30 years of age and looking for a job?
Do you need assistance with resume writing, practicing interview skills, or
job searching?
Are you interested in FIRST AID/CPR, WHMIS, and SMART SERVE certifications?

The YMCA is hosting the next Skills Development for Youth Program in Pickering beginning on August 8th.  The program includes 4 weeks of paid workshops and 8 weeks of paid job placement for youth between 15 and 30.
